CAM/HOMME 3.1 Aqua Planet Results

Plotted below is the KE spectra averaged over 12 months of aqua planet data. The plot from the CAM/HOMME simulation is sampled 3 times per day. I've attempted to reproduce the
figures created by David Williamson for the Eulerian dycore (below, left) and the FV dycore (below right).

I believe the runs using HOMME were made with a slighty conservative (too high) value of hyperviscosity. Based on the dry baroclinic test results (below), it looks like we can lower the viscosity for these resolutions (or keeping the viscosity fixed, reduce the resolution).

Jablonowski and Willianmson Baroclinic Instability Test

These results are from day 30 of the baroclinic instability test case from Jablonowski and Williamson, "A Baroclinic Instability Test Case for Atmospheric Model Dynamical Cores", Q.J.R. Meteorol. Soc. (2006).
These simulations are made with the dry dycore only - no physics.

The first two plots are from the standalone HOMME dycore. The left plot shows the effects of changing the hyper viscosity coefficient for a 0.5 degree simulation. The right plot is similar but for a 0.25 degree simulation.

These plots were created to mimic similar plots created by David Williamson for the Eulerian and FV dycores, reproduced below:
