  1. GENERAL (Yannick)

    • regular update today

    OBS (Hui)

    • OBS team now has the prototype capability for visible reflectance DA using CRTM v3. We are still at the early stage. However, the first try by Greg gives us a reasonable starting point. Working continues with CRTM to further improve the performance.
    • Ground radar DA is at the final stage. This is an ongoing effort with the developers at OU. Multiple meetings were held between OBS and OU and now we are iterating with the developers to optimize the code and update reference.
    • Pat has been working on using QC flags in ObsSpace. The QC flags are now present in operators but the implementation of using these QC flags will be done case by case. The first operator now being done is CRTM.
    • OBS continues to watch out for new observations and techniques. Lindsey attended the Polarized Radio Occultation (PRO) Workshop in person and BenJ and Hui attended remotely. This is a research observation type which provides complementing information about hydrometero, e.g., heavy rainfall to the current traditional RO technique and other satellite observation types. Currently, the forward operator is being developed using ROPP2D mostly at ECMWF. OBS team is in contact with the developers and will incorporate it into JEDI-ROPP2D if it is feasible in the future.
    • UKMet and JCSDA have been working closely on renovating the QC for GNSSRO operators through a visitor program sponsored by ROM SAF. Hailing visited the MetOffice for one month and worked with Neill. Now there are multiple PRs to add additional QC from different NWP centers and also separate existing QC from operators (implemented years ago). This work will give us more flexibility and options for GNSSRO data assimilation.

    CRTM (Cheng)

    • The two main items of interest that we are working on are CRTM version 3.1.0, which includes space based radar support, netCDF interface for RTS, generic interface, and native cmake support. We are also working with OBS team/Greg on TOA solar reflectance for visible DA, with COMPO team on evaluating aerosol-impacted radiance simulations also for visible DA.

    SOCA (Travis)

    • atlas mesh connectivity PR should be ready
    • Kriti has been preparing what is needed for marine skylab in the February period (to be the same as the atmosphere period) and the files needed for cycling marine-UFS model.

    COMPO (Jerome)

    • GEOS with GOCART aerosol experiments. Assimilating meteorology and aerosols.
    • Comparing: 3DEnVar, 4DEnVar, 4DTLMVar, 4DHTLMVar
    • Set up a new experiment with the operational GEOS-CF runs at c360 for TEMPO real data retrievals
    • Comparing OMB between TEMPO and TROPOMI
    • Starting activities and cross-functional group for investigating L1B assimilation for aerosols.

Chris Snyder: What is the configuration for GEOS for tempo testing?

Jerome: Full chemistry chem “geos-chem” offline model. Online configuration with chem on top. Quite expensive but best scheme you can have. Concerned about performance. Ideas to speed up.

    INFRA (Dom)

    • CDash server migrated to new hardware & software. Please check if the old and new CI systems are working correctly again, report issues to JCSDA INFRA
    • spack-stack-1.6.0 release: cut release branches next week, will roll out in the week before Christmas
    • Ambitious plan is to have support for GEOS-GCM (with Matthew Thompson from NASA) and cylc8 (flow, rose, UI); need help testing (obs)
    • In the process of rolling out a NRT obs ingest stream using CI (running on AWS ParallelCluster)
    • The new JEDI suite to obtain backgrounds outside of our “golden periods” is being used by JCSDA’s observation team to test a new observation sensor called WindBorne https://windbornesystems.com/
    • Will be working on UFO CI issues with new CI system so that we can retire the old CI system
    • R2D2 roll out next week: Thursday Dec 14; downtime will be an entire day, and experiments can’t be suspended/resumed, also software need to be updated

    ALGO (Anna)

Upcoming merges that may affect model interfaces:

Hernan Arango – Catching up on pending PRs. Updated Rutgers spack stack. Working on atlas mesh grid. 3dfgat cost function unit test. Get assertion fail error.

Anna – This is a result of pr merger in the last two weeks. More careful date checking. You must have the background at the beginning but covariance must be middle of window.

NASA GMAO (Ron Gelaro)  Continue to work those 3dvar cycle going with fuoll observing system. Issue with convergence of minimizers. NRL got attention on this. Meeting set up for this.

Also using that cycle to start confirming and validating observing system

Navy (Sarah King) – Focused on programmatics. Primary dev machine went down for a week.

    NOAA EMC - No update

    UKMet – No update

MMM (Chris Snyder) – Exploring GMI. Experimenting on gtkef. Atlas PR. Transition to derecho. Switching to cycl 8. MPAS question? What is the status of mpas-jedi. Any cycling?

Steve V – Working on 4denv high-res variable mesh. A lot of work for data file generation. Clem is trying to run on aws pcluster.  Exp at 100km. Works fine. Now at high res.
