CGD/IS maintains backups for critical data on division systems including desktops and laptops.

The brief list of data backed up on CGD systems is:

  • /home
  • H: Drive
  • /fs/cgd
  • /cluster/home on goldbach
  • User profile on MS-Windows and Apple-Mac systems
  • Web servers

What is NOT backed up:

  • anything in the /project directories
  • anything in /scratch
  • anything in /tmp
  • anything not specifically mentioned above

Schedules

Backups run either ad hoc or on schedule depending on the system.

Windows and Mac backups will be performed multiple times a day as your device checks in with CrashPlan.

Home and Mail directories on the linux systems are backed up daily. Snapshots of these directories are taken every six hours.

Restoring Files on Linux Systems

On linux systems, /home is backed up daily, but there are also snapshots taken every six hours.
In each user's directory is a hidden directory called ".snapshot".

Every six hours a snapshot is taken starting at midnight. If you were working on something in the morning and deleted it in the afternoon, you might be able to retrieve the file from the noon snapshot.

Likewise there is a snapshot taken every evening at midnight and one on Friday evening which is held for a week.

Users can often restore files themselves by searching within the .snapshot tree.
Once the file/directory is found, simply copy it back into your home directory.

If you need to go back further, then you will need to contact CGD/IS.
Remember that backups are only kept for 90 days.
