News and Accomplishments

VAPOR Project

Project information is available at: http://www.vapor.ucar.edu

WASP Award:

The new DataMgr, with support for the WASP-based VDC 3 file format, was integrated into the 3.0 vaporgui prototype, providing a platform for further exercising the WASP API.

John implemented a data importer for CF compliant data sets and tested it with POP and CAM data.

Support for missing data values was added to the WASP class.

John attended the DOECGF in Newport, RI, and gave a talk on WASP.

KISTI Award:

Scott progressed on a number of KISTI award deliverables:

  • Generated oceanographic terrain maps and modified glwindow.cpp to correctly handle transparency.
  • Progressed through the elevation calculation through correspondence from JiWoo and JinHee. This deliverable is currently on hold pending further clarification from KISTI.
  • Completed python documentation requirement.
  • Elicited requirements from JinHee for KISTI’s parallel data conversion script. Explored a parallel scripting language called Swift and implemented a proof-of-concept routine that runs on Geyser. Scott found Swift to be cumbersome so he sought advice from Divide DelVento on whether there might be a simpler way to implement our scripts on LSF. Began working with MPI.

2.x Development:

  • Scott Fixed a bug in DCReaderGRIB that prevented it from handling slices that had missing data

3.x Development:

We continue to make progress with VAPOR 3.0.  Alan replaced the Data Manager interface with the new 3.0 Data Manager, and the prototype can now read and display the new data format.  Alan is now working on improvements to the GUI code so as to make the most efficient reuse.  The embedding of transfer functions and of box sliders has been standardized so that these elements can now be easily added to GUI tabs without custom modifications.

Education and Outreach:

John attended the DOECGF in Newport, RI, and gave a talk on WASP.

Website re-organization:

  • Alan worked with Scott to reorganize our movie galleries, with all our content now on YouTube.
  • Scott Restructured and finalized changes to the gallery. Consolidated sandy videos, and categorized our galleries in Weather, Climate, Oceanography, Astrophysics, Turbulence, Biology, and an Archive.

Visitors:

Niklas Roeber arrived on 4/27 and is working on providing a wavelet representation for unstructured grids in VAPOR.  We spent some time helping him understand the VAPOR architecture, especially the 3.0 design.

Production Visualization Services & Consulting

Alan is continuing to work with Rich Rotunno (from MMM).  Rich is using CM1 to analyze wind flow over an idealized mountain.  He is also using VAPOR to visualize a WRF model of a supercell storm in northern Italy, with an Italian collaborator

Scott worked with a number of users:

  • Helped Tim Scheitlin convert his GRIB datasets of hurricane Odile for a program he is investigating called MOMET.
  • Helped Sopan Kurkute, a postdoc at MMM with visualizing his data. He came to my office for a half hour handson demo.
  • Helped Amin Farhang, a scientist from the Institute for Research in Fundamental Sciences (IPM) with the conversion of his raw data (via email)
