WASP Award:

John worked with PI Larry Frank (UCSD) to prepare a request to NSF for supplemental funding for the WASP project. Additional funding is being requested to provide proof-of-concept WASP data readers for NCL.

KISTI Award:

John submitted the final written report for the Year Six KISTI award.

Development:

2.6
VAPOR 2.6.0.RC0 was released on 11/17. The entire team spent much of the first half of November preparing the release (e.g. regression testing, fixing numerous bugs, updating installers, etc).

  • Scott wrote thorough and clear documentation on the Plot Utility, Statistics Utility, SeedMe Utility, and new colorbar options. He also added use help options for the new utilities.

3.x

John spent two weeks visiting DKRZ and continued efforts with Niklas Roeber to add support for VAPOR for native MPAS-O and ICON grids. While in Germany John and Niklas settled upon the UGRID conventions as the model for representing unstructured grid data and began making changes to the VAPOR I/O libraries needed to read UGRID data.

Samuel began exploring options for supporting volume rendering of curvilinear grids in VAPOR.

Education and Outreach:

Scott continued with his duties on the PEARC Tech Program Committee which included revising the call for participation for its visualization showcase and bi-weekly brainstorming conference calls.

Scott gave a presentation to eight executives of the Chineese Electric Power Research Institute (C-EPRI) at the request of Tim Scheitlin (CISL), Yubao Liu (RAL), and Yuewei Liu (RAL) on November 28 in the VisLab. The presentation covered the use of Vapor and basic use of NCL. Scott also showcased some of the recorded visualizations from CISL’s archive. The executives were interested in NCAR’s cutting-edge weather data visualization technology and tools, and the graphics that they produce.
