75: LOG, Site marshall, Mon 24-Mar-2008 10:08:33 MDT, PAM tripod heights
Measured heights of PAM tripods to determine variation in heights due
to interlacing them for the 1.3m separation. Heights are measured from
the ground to the tops of the horizontal braces:

26 inches
28.25
27.5
32.25
30
34.5
26.25
26
26.75

Thus the range in heights is 26 - 34.5 inches or a variation of 8.5
inches = 21.6 cm.

March 5, 2008

5:15 - 5:45pm MST

I added booms to the East and West PAM masts. Unfortunately, I had to remove a clamp towards the middle of the array so I took the West's boom/clamp/plate to
replace it. So NO clamp/boom/plate on West mast.

Put all sonics to 60 Hz. I confused myself and check and noticed I didn't have
sonics at a high rate. All is good!

I had to take boom clamp for the shop to re-create it for the project. Will see how long they will have this clamp to decide on if I should replace with
another style of clamp.

66: , Site , Tue 04-Mar-2008 15:12:10 MST, 10 PAMs w/ 3 sonics; NEW ANGLES
March 4, 2008

11:45 - 12:45pm MST

Kurt and Chris put the rest of the PAM masts up and had all but two of
the booms mounted ( two w/o are on the East and West ends). Picklefork is
down and stored in the yard at Marshall. Switched Pocketecs. I [think]
put all sonics at 20hz.

Angles:

East PAM to North sonic = 317.7 deg
Center sonics heading = 350.3 deg
West PAM to North sonic = 27.3 deg

February 29, 2008

3:00 - 4:20 pm MST

Kurt and Chris began setting up the new array for Dr. Horst. Four new PAM
tripods and mast have been set up and staked. We need to put booms and remove
pickle fork for it to complete.

Kurt and Chris have added the pickle fork to the PAM array. Installed
pickle fork on the middle PAM tripod. Added two sonics 1120 (East/ttyS9)
and 800 (West ttyS6) to the fork. We also removed the two adjacent PAM
masts to the fork. Lowered the reference sonic to 3.1m. Fork angles
follow...

East fork to North = 348.7
Central = 3.7
West fork to North = 256.6

Reference = 352.2

Also moved ADAM to the reference Aster tower.

January 28, 2008

11:48am - 12:22pm MST

Kurt and Chris took down Oncley's Array. Middle sonic was hooked on the East sonic on arrival. Whole array was in bad shape. Winds were high enough to move booms out of alignment, even with the emt pipe for support. Kurt noticed bolts on all-thread were loose on East and Middle sonics. All sonics were tight in the sonic head.

PAM Array was fixed (West tower was on it's side and in the array). We re-aligned and staked down all the towers.

No new angles were shot. All cords were unplugged and brought back with sonics.
55: sonic, Site marshall, Tue 22-Jan-2008 15:43:36 MST, North PAM moved to 7.8m; NEW ANGLES
January 22, 2008

2:26 - 2:52pm MST

Tom and Chris moved North PAM array sonic to 7.8m from the South array.
Prior distance was at 5.2m.

E end of PAM array to N. sonic = 325.5 deg.
West end of PAM array to N. sonic = 016.2 deg.
Azimuth of North sonic = 351.3 deg.

Swapped Pocktecs.

52: sonic, Site marshall, Tue 08-Jan-2008 17:32:29 MST, Oncley Array lowered; New Angles
January 8, 2008

2:40 - 3:30pm MST

Kurt and Chris lowered the sonics on the "Oncley Array." They were
lowered with all-thread and to a length of 70cm. Added a EMT pipe to
join all three South booms together. Recommend putting a pipe on sonic
heads...way unstable. New angles follow:

North Sonic = 339.4 deg
SouthEast = 353.1 deg
Southcentral = 349.5 deg
SouthWest = 338.0

Pocketec switched.

51: sonic, Site marshall, Tue 08-Jan-2008 08:55:13 MST, Windy Day for Non-gussets...more angles
January 5, 2008

11:55 - 12:09pm MST

Kurt and Chris could not lower "Oncley's Array" due to high winds.
They replaced the mast on the East PAM tower to a non-gusseted one.
Now all booms are nearly the same height. Shot angles from East/West
tower back to South sonic.

East - Sonic = 225.4 deg
West - Sonic = 117.6 deg

50: status, Site marshall, Fri 04-Jan-2008 08:43:04 MST, 3m PAM Array is a GO! New Angles
January 3, 2008

4:25 - 5:16pm MST

Angles of sonics (4.5m)

Sonic in the PAM Array 349.0 deg
Sonic behind array 352.3 deg

Angles of sonics (3m)

Sonic in the PAM Array 351.5 deg
Sonic behind array 352.2 deg

All heights are around 3.1m. The PAM that is East on the array is
at 3.4m. This is due to the gussets on the mast. I have also measured
the angles from each PAM mast to the back/North sonic. Measuring from
East tripod to West back to North sonic.

December 20, 2007: 3:00pm - 4:30pm MST

Kurt and Chris set up five PAM tripods with the center holding the 8m
sonic from other array. The North sonic is the same 16m sonic from
other array. Sonics have been kept plugged into their same ports.

The whole PAM array is not finished. All tripods have been set but
masts are not in place. Sonics are in their positions but not at 3m,
they are still at the 4.5m.

Nothing was done to the "Oncley Array."

Arrived Marshall 11:51 MST; departed around 12:55 MST

Calibrated datascope after replacing batteries.
Grade was 'good 7'
Declination = 0.0 degrees

Sonic Magnetic	True (+9.5 deg)

North16m	346.6, 346.7	356.1, 356.2

In the revised Oncley array, the SouthE, SouthW and NorthM sonics have
twisted to the east, presumably due to the recent strong west winds.
The SouthM sonic appeared to have maintained its orientation. The
current azimuths are:

South_E 325.5, 325.6	335.0, 335.1
South_M 347.2, 347.6	356.7, 357.1

North_M 329.2, 329.0	338.7, 338.5

Ends of Horizontal Array and SPO array to north sonics
HA_e to N8m	336.0 345.5

SPO_e t0 N8m	001.6 011.1
SPO_e to N16m	350.9 000.4

From 14:45 - 15:45 MST, Steve Semmer re-aligned the SPO array sonics.
He also added a wooden brace between the South_w and South_m sonic booms
to hold the South_w boom parallel to the South_m boom.

New Azimuths:

South_E 345.6 355.1
South_M 348.5 358.0
South_W 349.4 358.9
North_M 348.5 358.0

41: sonic, Site marshall, Mon 03-Dec-2007 15:54:41 MST, Reconfigured array 11/30/07
Chris, Kurt and Tom went to Marshall on the afternoon of 11/30/07 to
revise the sonic array. Arrived on site at 14:00 MST.

We Moved the south12m sonic to 16m north of the horizontal array.

Remounted the Oncley advection array sonics from a facing-downward
orientation to an upside down orientation. Thus measured W = -W and
measured V = -V for the normally-oriented sonics. The measurement
volume of the downward-facing sonics were 35 1/2" below the top of the
sonic boom, which itself is mounted on the underside of the horizontal
aster tower. In the new, upside-down orientation the sonic measurement
volume is 21 1/2" below the top of the sonic boom.

In the new orientation, the Oncley array sonics are 4.05 m above ground
level, so we moved the west sonic up to 4.05 m.

We removed the west.1.m sonic; S/N 853. It ran okay at 20 Hz.

We left the site at 15:30 MST.

40: data, Site marshall, Thu 29-Nov-2007 14:27:31 MST, end of good data due to loss of power
The data from all sonics started dropping out sometime after 11/24/07

The number of samples in 12 hours should be 2,592,000. The smallest
number of (60 Hz) samples is 2,472,990, so the dropouts started around
perhaps 11:26:56 GMT 11/24/07 or 04:26:56 MST.

39: sonic, Site marshall, Wed 28-Nov-2007 14:01:11 MST, azimuth angles of Oncley advection array
On 11/27/07, Chris and Kurt measured the angles between the Oncley
advection array sonics:

Southwest to North = 0.1 deg (9.6 deg True)
SouthEast to North = 338.0 deg (347.5 True)

38: sonic, Site marshall, Wed 28-Nov-2007 13:00:21 MST, Replaced west.3.6m sonic; reconfigured sonics to 20 Hz
On 11/27/07, Chris and Kurt replaced the 3.6m west sonic with S/N 0537 and
reconfigured all sonics to run at 20 Hz (not oversampled). Thus, we are
currently running nine sonics at 20 Hz. The reason for the additional
sonic is that they decided to see if the former west sonic is okay at
20 Hz. So it is in port 11 (west.1.m) and also running at 20 Hz.

All this was done from 1130 - 1310.

37: LOG, Site marshall, Wed 28-Nov-2007 12:45:46 MST, Fixed solar power and plugged ADAM into line power on Nov 27
Kurt and Chris went out to Marshall yesterday (11/27/07) and found
the problem with the power. It was the cable from the panels to the
batteries...it was pulled out. They decided to keep that system up and
running and check to see if it will charge the batteries, BUT plugged in
the ADAM to line power.

All this was done from 1130 - 1310. They did not change the pocket-tecs.

34: sonic, Site marshall, Wed 21-Nov-2007 15:05:34 MST, Result of sonic swap: S/N 853 missing samples
I ran data_stats on data since the southw1m sonic was swapped with the
west sonic around 15:00 MST 11/20/07 (22:00 GMT 11/20/07). The problem
has now followed the sonic (853) to the west location (sampid 240) and
the south1m sonic (538) is now okay (sampid 200). The conclusion is
that the adjacent sonics are not interferring with one another, but that
perhaps S/N 853 now has a problem running at 60 Hz. Next week we will
try reducing its sampling rate to 20 Hz.

Chris and Kurt swapped the southw1m (853) and west (538) sonics this
afternoon to determine if lost samples on south1m sonic is caused by
proximity to southm1m or just a misbehaving sonic. They did this
between roughly 14:15 and 15:00.

Kurt also staked the new solar panel rack installed on Monday.

up to 5 minutes in order to check the quality of data from the south1m
west sonic. All sonics reported 60 Hz data.

This work was done late Monday afternoon after restoring power to the
data system. It was completed about 16:30 MST, Nov 19, 2007.

27: LOG, Site marshall, Tue 20-Nov-2007 10:09:40 MST, Restored power to Marshall site
Steve S. and Chris restored power to the Marshall site late yesterday
afternoon, Nov 19. They removed the dead battery (reading 3V), installed
two new batteries, and added a second rack of solar panels.

Data archival began at 16:23, Nov 19, 2007.

26: sonic, Site marshall, Mon 19-Nov-2007 17:11:15 MST, Coordinate system for down-pointing sonics
Here's how I've defined things when a sonic is hanging down.
This is a bit different from your AHATS log entry, since I define
a "down" instrument coordinate system independent of geographic
coords.

When a sonic is hanging down, define the new sonic U axis to be the
usual up direction of the sonic array (the usual W axis).
The new W is, of course, up into the array (the usual U). V is chosen
so that things are right handed, which is the negative of the usual V.

So, with the "down" sonics at Marshall, the U axis is pointing east,
making the V axis north. So the Vazimuth values for the
down sonics will be approximately 0 deg. I've changed the
cal_files for those sonics.

In the XML, one adds an orientation parameter of "down", which,
of course defaults to "normal":

      ...

24: sonic, Site marshall, Mon 19-Nov-2007 14:50:00 MST, bad sonic data from southw1m
The diag values for southw1m, the west-most of the
3 hang-down sonics, look sick since it was installed
on Nov 13.

I'd check the that the head cable is fully plugged in.
If that is OK, it seems that it should be replaced.

The 5 minute means for u,v,w,tc look reasonable from that sonic,
so over 5 minutes we do get some good data, but quite
a few high rate points are missing.
23: data, Site marshall, Mon 19-Nov-2007 14:45:32 MST, Data system stopped
I arrived at Marshall around 9:20, 11/19, and found the data system
had stopped. We speculate that the battery is dead due to increasing
the number of sonics from 3 to 8 last week.

I swapped in a new pocketec. Chris and Steve Semmer plan to put out a
second battery and a second solar panel array this afternoon.

Measured azimuths, took photos, and left at 10:13.

P.S. John Militzer did a quick power estimate and confirmed that one
battery and one rack of solar panels is inadequate for 8 sonics running
at 60 Hz. From the data files, the station stopped on Nov 17, a little
after 02:00 GMT, which would be Nov 16, 19:00 MST.

20: LOG, Site marshall, Tue 13-Nov-2007 15:08:36 MST, Oncley advection array
11/12/07, 14:10: Kurt, Chris, and I arrived at Marshall to deploy a test
of the Oncley-suggested advection array. Steve Semmer arrived about an
hour later to help out.

The Oncley advection array consists of pairs of sonics suspended below
the horizontal ASTER tower section, facing downward, and nominally
upwind and downwind of (but below) the ASTER tower section. In order
to evaluate the associated flow distortion at the downwind sonics,
we put three sonics upwind (south) and a single sonic downwind (north)
and opposite the middle upwind sonic. The sonics are separated by a
crosswind spacing of 0.43 m and an alongwind speparation of around 3 m
(need to measure this more exactly). They are on the west end of the
horizontal array at a nominal height of 3.6 m.

A fifth sonic was placed on a separate tower to the west and a little
south of the crosswind array to provide undisturbed reference measurements
for the three upwind sonics. For example, we need to determine the wind
direction acceptance angle for the downward-pointing sonics.

The downward-pointing sonics have their usual vertical (W) axis pointing
east, so that a wind from the west produces a positive w signal; the
usual U axis is up so that a positive vertical component produces a
positive u signal; the usual V axis is pointing south so that a wind
from the north produces a positive v signal.
Thus the transformation for the downward-pointing sonics is

Measured Wind component for
wind component	south-pointing sonics
U W
V -U (wind from north)
W -V (wind from west)

We also moved the north sonics from 4m and 8m to 8m and 12m.

We quit about 16:00 due to lack of parts, approaching darkness, and cold.
Gordon, Steve Semmer and I completed the installation of the advection
array the next day, 11/13/07, between 11:15 and 13:00.

Gordon changed the data system configuration to accomodate the 5 new
sonics and moved the data system from the southern of the two north PAM
masts to the west end of the horizontal array. He also output the sonic
configs to determine the following S/N's

Sonic S/N

south.4.5m	1122
north8m.4.5m	1124
norht12.4.5mm	1121

southw1m.3.6m	853 (upwind west)
southm1m.3.6m	1117	(upwind middle)
southe1m.3.6m	800	(upwind east)
north1m.3.6m	1120	(downwind)
west.3.6m	538	(reference)

We confirmed the S/N's of the sonics on the horizontal array, but could
not see the sonic S/N's on the north PAM masts.

18: sonic, Site marshall, Tue 06-Nov-2007 14:07:25 MST, csat cal files for Marshall field test
Gordon and I agreed to use the convention that the sonic did will refer
to the sonic location, e.g. "south", "north2m","north4m","north8m",
but we have named the cal_files "csat_north_1" and "csat_north_2"
where "1" is the closer of the two north sonics irrespective of its
absolute distance from the horizontal array. For example, before Nov
2 csat_north_1 was 2m from the array, but now is 4m from the array.

The pocketec swapped out on 11/2 only had one file on it!

11/6/07 at 11:24:

I swapped the disks at marshall and the new covars
are running right now.

We lost 4 days + 5 hours of data from
Oct 29 15:26 (09:26 MDT) to Nov 2 20:21 (14:21 MDT).

It seems to have been a disk error - the system logs
reported a usb disconnect on Oct 29 15:26, one minute after
it had been swapped in. The system then remounted the disk
read-only.

It was the "big" disk, the one labeled NCAR-RAF.
After the problem, I did some extensive write testing
to that disk and couldn't get it to fail.

But, we should avoid using that disk on this pro

12: LOG, Site marshall, Thu 25-Oct-2007 16:35:51 MDT, Modifications to Marshall array
Two changes were made to the Marshall array by Kurt and Chris,
starting at 11:08 MDT and ending at 11:57 MDT, October 25:

1) Removed electronic backing plates from horizontal array (to determine
the change in the wake/flow distortion).

2) Added guy wires to the two PAM masts from the bottom of the legs to
the top of the mast (to steady the masts in high winds).

Adding the guy wires required rotating the upper PAM mast section by 180
degrees and thus the sonics were removed and remounted and the sonic
azimuths were remeaured with the DataScope:

		Mag	True (+9.5)
South sonic: 347.4	356.9
North2m sonic:	353.0 2.5
North4m sonic:	353.5 3.0

Note that the azimuth for the south sonic goes back to Oct 18, when the
5m ASTER tower was removed.

11: LOG, Site marshall, Mon 22-Oct-2007 12:39:49 MDT, Pocketec swapped Oct 22
Swapped pocketec local data storage around 9:01 MDT, Oct 22.
10: sonic, Site marshall, Mon 22-Oct-2007 10:30:06 MDT, High winds at Marshall
I went out to Marshall around 5:15-5:30 pm, Oct. 18, to look at the sonics
with a high wind blowing. (10-23-07: The 5-minute average wind speeds
were up to 10 m/s.) The PAM masts and the sonics were moving quite a bit
in the strong wind. I recommended to Kurt that he add guy wires to the
PAM masts to stabilize the sonics. At present the only guy wires are
the normal stiffening wires attached to the mast at heights of roughly
1.5 m and 5 m.

The Foothills wx station shows rain from afternoon on Saturday, Oct 13,
until just past midnight early Monday morning, Oct 15.

8: LOG, Site marshall, Thu 18-Oct-2007 14:15:50 MDT, Removed upper horizontal ASTER tower section
From 11:00 - 11:55 MDT, Oct. 18, Chris and Kurt removed the upper (5m)
of the two horizontal ASTER tower sections in the array at Marshall.
The purpose is to make the flow distortion of this surrogate for the
upwind AHATS array more similar to that expected during the actual field
program, i.e. there will only be one horizontal tower in the upwind array.
(But I recall now that I originally decided to leave it in place because
we expect the 'carriage' of the moveable arrays to require two horizontal
sections!)

Note that removing the upper ASTER tower section required removing
(11:00) and remounting (11:55) the south sonic, so its orientation will
need to be re-measured with the DataScope. The wind was blowing too
hard to accomplish this today.

7: LOG, Site marshall, Thu 18-Oct-2007 09:15:53 MDT, Added yokes to horizontal array
Around 15:00 MDT, Oct 16, Chris and Kurt added 10 more yokes to the
horizontal array in order to make the flow distortion more closely
replicate that expected from the upwind array during AHATS.

6: data, Site marshall, Tue 16-Oct-2007 17:20:41 MDT, Pocketec swapped Oct 11 and 16
I swapped pocketecs on 10/11 at 14:57:57 GMT and Chris and Kurt swapped
pocketecs today, 10/16 around 14:55 MDT.

5: sonic, Site marshall, Tue 16-Oct-2007 17:15:49 MDT, replaced bad sonic cable
The north2m sonic cable has been disconnected, so no data has been
collected until it was properly connected this afternoon, 10/16, around
14:45 MDT.

4: sonic, Site marshall, Tue 16-Oct-2007 17:13:33 MDT, Replaced yoke for south sonic
Kurt and Chris replaced the mounting yoke for the south sonic this
afternoon. This changed the sonic azimuth to 346.5 deg magnetic and
356 deg true. Chris said this was done around the same time that the
cable for north2m was connected properly, 14:45 MDT.

3: sonic, Site marshall, Tue 16-Oct-2007 16:09:56 MDT, sonic azimuths
On 10/9/07, Kurt and Chris measured the orientations of the sonics with
the datascope with a declination of 0 degrees.

and the declination is 9.5 deg E

2: LOG, Site marshall, Tue 16-Oct-2007 14:07:18 MDT, Marshall advection test
AHATS will directly measure the advection terms in the turbulent flux
conservation equations by placing one horizontal array of sonics upwind
of the primary/secondary (two level) sonic array. Chenning estimates
that placing this array 4 m upwind of the primary array will minimize
flow distortion at the location of the primary/secondary array caused by
the wake of the upwind array.

We have begun a test at the Marshall site of this theoretical estimate of
sufficient streamwise separation, using the existing goalpost horizontal
array set up prior to OHATS. This array uses two horizontal ASTER towers
at heights of 4.5 and 5 m supported by two vertical ASTER towers. We are
using the lower horizontal tower at a height of 4.5 m as a surrogate for
the AHATS upwind array, mounting 11 sonic electronic backing plates on it
with a separation of 0.43 m, the closest sonic spacing planned for AHATS.

We then mounted one sonic on the horizontal array to measure the
undisturbed flow upwind (south) of the array and two sonics at 4.5 m on
two PAM masts downwind (north) of the array. The two downwind sonics
were placed 4 m north of the center of the horizontal array and 2 m north
of (roughly) the center of the east half of the horizontal array:

S sonic 4 m downwind of horizontal array

S sonic 2 m downwind of horizontal array

[----------------------]	horizontal ASTER tower

            S upwind sonic

(North is up on diagram; good winds for the test are from the South)

This array began operating on Tuesday, October 9, at 16:18:34 MDT
