This deployment of mostly EOL systems is intended to serve two primary purposes.

  1. Data from an instrumented multi-level flux tower to compare with tower fly-by measurements from UAVs that the University of Colorado will operate.
  2. Data collected from the tower, profilers, wind lidar, and MPD will be synthesized to develop algorithms that LOTOS would use to generate derived data products.  To achieve this goal, EOL has invited the University of Oklahoma to participate by bringing their CLAMPS system, specifically with an AERI, that is proposed to be a LOTOS component.  CLAMPS also has an additional wind lidar that will be used to create virtual towers.

In addition, there will be several secondary instrument development activities:

  1. ISFS will work on a method to mount flux sensors at intermediate levels of our telescoping towers.
  2. ISS will gain experience on their new mobile 449 profiler.
  3. ISS will test the addition of RASS capability to the 449 profiler.
  4. Evaluate new data display tools

Planned Schedule

Oct 2020: Water vapor MPD03 was deployed at Marshall. (Does not have temperature.)

13 May 2021: ISS deploy MISS (915 MHz DBS profiler and GAUS RS92 radiosonde system)

18 May 2021: ISFS adds the flux tower, with UAS flights starting soon thereafter.

21 June 2021: ISS adds 449 MHz Modular Profiler with RASS, ceilometer and a wind lidar.

24 June 2021: ISFS flux tower extended to full height.  449 Profiler becomes operational

13 July 2021: CLAMPS arrives, and is set up by Josh.  Primary data collection with all platforms begins, including RS92 radiosonde launches. CU UAS flights hopefully can occur.  S-Pol could be running.

5 Aug 2021: ISFS flux tower briefly retracted and re-extended

14? Aug 2021: CLAMPS leaves, to be used in Houston air quality study by 15 Aug.

18 Aug 2021: ISFS flux tower retracted, but still vertical

22 Sep 2021: ISFS flux tower extended to full height to support CU UAS fly-bys

28 Sep 2021: ISFS flux tower again retracted, but still vertical

IOP July 13 to August 13

Preliminary Instrumentation Locations:

The ISFS trailer tower will be at: 39.947966°, -105.195719°.
