TRAM Trailer Tire

July 13, 2013

Installed new tire on TRAM trailer today.  Also, have a full spare for the trailer ready to go.

Soilb mote rebooted

July 13, 2013

?~11:00am CDT

Checked soilb mote due to no communication.  It seemed happy but rebooted anyway.  Noticed data started to come in.  Trees are getting really thick for a difficult line-of-sight from that mote to tower.

20m IRT removed

July 13, 2013

~10:30am CDT

Removed IRT from mote due to crashing the mote.  Once sensor was down, noticed the back-shell of sensor (PVC part) was full of water.  FULL.

Will replace with a dry IRT.

Constant rain in Tusc. in am 5:15-6 and tower has significant, lasting rain beginning around 3:30ish   100%chance today!  Frontal passage last night got us good.   Through the middle of the day we had overcast but no more rain, similar in evening.

Other

Road to tower getting pretty bad....    Putting some buckets of gravel in truck today for when we get stuck...will avoid it for now but ACD/CU people still using it...   CU trailer ops were moved and power shut down a few days ago.
Power glitch in am that didn't really cause any problems for us or ACD.

All sonics appear effected by rain esp. 14,20,26,32,38.   Impossible to tell if Chris' adjustment on 20m helped until we get 'drying'.   Seeing some rip's on cockpit.   Appears 2m and 38m (ec150) are 'happiest' and fairly normal.   By the end of the day all sonics appeared to be working including 20m and it has normal sample counts.   Chris' adjustment may have helped.

~3:45pm CDT

Re-adjusted shim I put at 20m sonic electronics box due to cable pinching.  I did this before to stop low signal flags.  Let's see if this works again.

The cable to the head of the sonic is too sharp when plugged into box due to the boom bracket too close.  Put a biner for a spacer to keep cables from kinking.

Weather

Rain events yesteray afternoon and maybe overnight.   Overcast in am but i can actually see the sun rise for a change...  Skies cleared quickly and we had some drying but clouded up more in afternoon with a healthy rain around 13:00.   Mostly overcast in afternoon.   We drove through a very heavy rain which may have been the expected frontal passage before it reached the station, apparently weakened by 18:00ish

Sonics

20m issues

All sonics running.   All sonics effected by the rain some.   20m still has reduced samples / low signal, but with the sun in am the sample counts creeped up towards 60hz.   Chris notes elsewhere about adjusting a spacer for the transducer connection in hopes a kink was causing issues.   However with the later rain event the sensor is mostly bad once again.

SoilA 'down' from ~7:30-12:00 localCDT

SoilA mote went into continuous reboot mode.   Although this problem usually means a sensor is locking up the i2c lines, in this case that apparently did not happen.    Removing the sensors didn't clear it up but a power cycle did.   There is noticeable corrosion on the mote board, esp. near the gps area.   This board is not coated, and should be cleaned at some point.   It also has the bad 4.4cm temp.

Cockpit also showed rip's for the rad-mote during this time.   However, the data plots still had enough records coming through for the covars to be calculated even though 5-sec data are missing.

8Jul13

Since the rain a couple days ago, and noted in the daily log, the 43m barometer has not been 'reporting' in cockpit and data plots.   Although initially a power cycle didn't help, it later began spitting out messages again perhaps after a bit of drying of the sensor/cable.   At first the messages were quite messed up but subsequently began sending normal looking messages per rserial.   However there were non-printing/null characters embedded causing the scanf format to ignore it in the stats-proc for data plots, etc, so it appeared to be out completely.   Today Chris went up and swapped in a fresh cable, to no avail.   Nor did trying another port help.   The messages look reasonable with good data via rserial and datastats show 14.83 hz, having some clearly bad lines every 10-20 messages or so.   The problem is likely in the sensor/cannister itself but we don't have a spare and decided not to try opening it up.    The data should be recoverable in port processing with a different scan format but for now at least we'll continue to see it as 'out.'     Hopefully it will recover completely on its own.

Comment by Gordon, Jul 9. The serial driver reports many framing errors (fe) and break (brk) conditions, indicating a problem with the serial signal. These are the counts since the last reboot of the "high" DSM, 38 days ago:

cktty 8
8: uart:ST16654 port:F1000118 irq:3 tx:252 rx:827230600 fe:1647480 brk:3542175 RTS|CTS|DTR|DSR|CD|RI

As of this morning it seems that is is recovering.
