Here are the meeting notes, formatted for clarity and readability.
Continuous DA & HTLM: Cleaning up various PRs submitted before the holidays.
Scalability: Beginning to vet continuous DA at larger scales.
TLM Toolbox: Added Tom Hill's TLM toolbox to fv3-jedi and SOCA; removed the now redundant linearization error application from both.
Documentation: Paper from Benjamin regarding NICAS.
IODA Converter
Seviri l1b Native SatPy Converter (PR #1722): Data is publicly available via the new EUMETSAT eumdac tool (Guide: EUMETSAT Data Access). Also includes other useful data, such as Copernicus missions.
NOAA bufr_query (PR #1730): Adds a "quiet find" for the NOAA bufr_query package to help enable MEPO support for NASA GMAO.
UFO
Mean Earth Radius Update (PR #3937):
Attention Needed: Please remind the team about this change.
Renaming mean_earth_rad to mean_earth_rad_km to match the value.
Adding mean_earth_rad_m (calculated from semi-major and semi-minor axes).
ABI G19 CRTM: Adding links for coefficients (PR #3928).
CI Fixes: Fixing Intel compiler test failures that were reproducible locally (PR #3938).
CF Compliance: Moving sea ice variables to CF-compliant names (from Anna S., PR #3942).
JCSDA & NOAA GSL (Ben R., Fabio, Raji, Guoqing Ge, Samuel)
Discussed methods for reducing observation space for multiple domains.
Will attempt a "bin packing" problem approach using AcceptList/RejectList.
OSDF Reader: Good progress; a draft PR is in place with the complete reader flow (load, filter, distribute steps).
Testing: Currently testing with large Skylab experiments to flush out bugs and missing functionality. A testable version is expected in a few weeks.
VADER: Many new recipes are being contributed, creating a review backlog for Steve V. (This work makes VADER a highly valuable component of JEDI).
Fixes: A number of UFO test failures and other defects have been resolved.
Technical Debt (Large PR): Addressed significant technical debt by aligning TL (Tangent Linear) and ADJ (Adjoint) with changes in forward operators. Some issues remain.
Stability (Smaller PR): Isolated potential for underflow and segfaults by changing error checking and temporary arrays.
GFS v17: Retrospective carrying on. Thanks to the core team for release branches; will tag when stable.
Configuration: Adopting JCB paradigm for YAMLs (HAFS and RFS systems) to separate configuration YAMLs from workflows.
ROPP Operator Comparison:
Running a series of H(x)'s comparing RMS and Bias.
ROPP 1-D is not as good as others.
ROPP 2-D looks the same; need to check increments.
Discussion (Ron & Dan): Ron noted that at GMAO (ROPP vs. NDAM in OSSE), they usually didn't find differences in similar tests (no cycling). Dan noted that 2D wouldn't work in a GSI context but might show differences in cycling (which hasn't been done yet).
Updates: Primarily focused on updating the operational system; fewer JEDI-specific updates.
Issues:
Reports of issues with LETKF, linearization, and bias correction (VarBC) that ctests did not capture. A PR exists with a ctest illustrating the problem caused by an increase in input data.
GSIBEC issues will be addressed when Ricardo returns fully to JEDI.
Testing shows differences going from GSI IODA to buffer gen files with radiance; currently investigating.
SOCA (Dorouk): Anna is helping with SOCA work regarding in-situ potential temperature differences to use VADER (close to merge).
RRFS/MPAS-JEDI: Focused on building a real-time experiment system to compare with other operational systems.
Target: Get a good sense of how MPAS-JEDI compares to operations.
Challenges: Technical issues unrelated to JEDI (e.g., file sizes).
Smoke & Dust: Working on a system using PM2.5. Conducting retrospective tests with fv3-jedi (smoke/dust) and mpas-jedi.
Evaluation: Evaluating radiance and radar reflectivity observations.
Optimization: Plug for a PR from Steve Sandbach to remove an extra geometry constructor and temporary increment needed for benchmarks on the next-gen supercomputer.
Ice Data: Updates on Ice Freeboard and ice thickness data (linearization error removal, etc.).
RTTOV C++ Interface: Progress made on work with the Met Office.
CI Tests: A small PR broke a CI test; investigating the best way to fix it among several options.
No updates.
