The first components of the JEDI system to be developed will be the unified forward (observation) operator (UFO) and the observational database as these can already be used for other applications (model verification, statistical post-processing) before the complete data assimilation system is implemented.

The main objective of this task is to design of the abstract classes and interfaces required for the UFO implementation (includes classes for observations, model states, observations locations and model fields interpolated to observations locations). Based on those, a model agnostic UFO will be implemented. Unit tests for the UFO and its components will be written and one or two toy models will be implemented for testing (Lorenz and/or QG model for example).
