12/12/10  6:00 pm  changed SHT09 toSHT26. SHT09 was installed yesterday by TOm and Gordon. It came from Boulder in the care package.

SHT026 is a new sensor from Boulder.

Dec 11, 1:08 pm, Tom, Gordon

Replaced TRH transducer 013 with 009

Cleaned krypton from ladder, did not drop mast.

Installed higher gain antenna on cellular modem. This turned out to be a hassle.

Prior to the antenna change, the router modem page reported signal 65%, -78 dBm for the modem, which is not bad, but I figured we could use this as an opportunity to test the higher gain antenna. If it ain't broke, fix it anyway...

I tried hot-swapping the antenna on the modem, which then apparently caused problems on the router. At first the WLAN would not come up. Connected via the ethernet, the wifi was disabled. After re-enabling the wifi, the router would not stay up. The router WAN and WLAN LEDs would come on, and then the USB LEN, and then after a second all would go out again, as if the router was resetting. Connection to the ethernet or wifi would only last a second or two.

Reset router to factory defaults by holding in reset button while powering up. Then downloaded the configuration and tweaked it for station isfs1. Router would then stay up.

After the change the modem signal level was 70%, -77 dBm. This is no real improvement from the smaller antenna.

Sonic QC

I created and edited csat_isfs#.dat cal_files in boom_normal directory

I set cal_files to NA when diag exceeded 0.01 to 0.02.

Cal files edited through Dec 1 12:00 and copied to instrument directory.

Dec 9, 08:44 am, Tom, Gordon

data from wvally4 stopped overnight. At the site, the data system up and taking data, yesterday's files had been copied.

/var/log/isfs/kernel had many messages about eth0 down and up.

Power, WAN and WLAN LEDs were on, but not the USB. Modem LED was on solid. Could not ping the router, 192.168.0.1.

Power cycled router with

vio 7 0
vio 7 1

Router came up and the modem connected.

Apparently need to modify the network check scripts. If the viper cannot ping the router, then the router is not power cycled. It is cycled only if the viper can ping the router, but cannot ping google or EOL. This was done so that the modem would not do reconnects if the problem was in the ethernet wiring of the box. Will change the crontab, so that once an hour if the router cannot be pinged, the power will be cycled.

Pulled a drip loop in pyrgeometer data cable. Drip loop on pyranometer is not as good.

Left 8:44 am.

Updated the crontabs on all stations, so that once an hour do a router_check.sh without a net_check.sh:

# Only run router_check.sh if net_check.sh succeeds to avoid power cycling modem
# if the problem is with the ethernet connection
15,30,45 * * * * net_check.sh eth0 192.168.0 192.168.0.1 && router_check.sh 7 www.eol.uca
# once an hour skip net_check.sh

playa1 krypton

Dec 08, 4:23 pm, Tom, Gordon

Cleaned krypton with water from ladder, didn't lower mast. 4:2? pm

   twh (3/1/11): high-rate data shows cleaned at 16:27

Sonic wicks ok, though one extended about 1cm past surface of transducer.
Pulled it back, so that it extended just a little past surface.

kh2oV = 1.5 V after cleaning

abc2 krypton

Dec 8, 3:40 pm, Tom, Gordon

kh2oV = 0.001 V

Mast down 3:49

cleaned krypton with water

   twh (3/1/11): high-rate data shows cleaned at 15:53

kh2oV=1.6 V

sonic wicks OK

mast up 3:56 pm

   twh (3/1/11): high-rate w suggests mast down 15:51 - 15:56

           (3/2/11): high-rate T-tc supports these times

wvally4 krypton

Dec 8, 2:33 pm, Tom, Gordon

kh2oV = 0.06 V

Lowered mast 2:42 pm

Cleaned krypton with water. kh2oV=1.3 V

  twh (3/1/11): high-rate data shows cleaning at 14:44

Sonic wicks OK

Raised mast, 2:49 pm.

  twh (3/1/11): high-rate u,w data shows mast down 14:42 - 14:47;

                          14:49 may reflect time taken to complete guy wire attachment

         (3/2/11): high-rate pressure data agrees with u,w data

hiland3 krypton, soils

Dec 8, 1:42 pm MST, Tom, Gordon

kh2oV = 0.27 V

Lowered mast at 1:48 pm. Cleaned krypton with water. kh2oV = 1.5 V

Raised mast 1:59.

   twh (3/1/11) high-rate kh2oV and w suggest these times for lowering & raising the mast are okay.

          (3/2/11): kh20V data shows cleaning occurred at 13:52;

                          high-rate pressure data clearly shows mast down 13:50 - 15:58;

                          longer period (13:48 - 13:59) may account for time to begin and complete mast lowering

Soil mote has not been reporting at this site since last night. Tsoil owed spikes last night, then all soil data stopped.

mote_dump showed it was continually resetting. Yellow light on solid.

Disconnected tsoil 018, restarted mote. This site now has no Tsoil.

baked TRHs

Per Steve Semmer's suggestion, left a bad TRH (015 from abc2) in the soil oven at between 35 and 40C for a few hours yesterday. This unit was giving a RH of -3, with a raw value of 0. After the baking it was generating believable T and Rh in the trailer, but upon blowing on it, the RH would go up to 50% and then cut out, back to -3%. Same thing happened when putting it outside.

Left 015 and 023 (from wslope6) TRH transducers in the soil oven at about 40C overnight. Later the next afternoon tested 015 again. Data "looked" ok and couldn't get it to fail by breathing or putting it outside.

Tom doesn't trust it, since the calibration may have changed, so we'll send these back to Boulder, along with some Tsoils.
