Meeting Notes
Infrastructure:
- Observation Ingest:
- Ashley: TEMPEST and COWVR added to observation ingest suite.
- Spack:
- Ashley: Spack-stack 1.9.0 for Intel Classic, OneAPI, and GNU installed on discover-scu17 (Milan).
- Steve H: Spack-stack 1.9.0 release branch cut last week. Rollout on HPC and AWS platforms progressing well this week. Official release anticipated in the next couple of days.
- r2d2:
- Steve G: Overhauling r2d2 automated tests for server and client; testing r2d2 kernel functions.
- Eric: Stress, concurrency, and scalability testing of the r2d2 production server on AWS using full-resolution Skylab runs.
SOCA:
- Memory and CPU optimizations ongoing.
- Anna: Fixed a bottleneck impacting LETKF CPU usage.
- Kriti: Working on HTLM application in SOCA; experiencing high linearization errors. Working with Christian to resolve.
ALGO:
- GEOS-JEDI: PRs open to allow building JEDI against GEOS (first step towards running GEOS with JEDI for 4DVar).
- Clean GEOS EDA experiment being developed for inclusion with JEDI release.
- Workflow changes in Skylab for CDA testing being implemented.
- OOPS changes being designed for shifting the beginning of the window.
- SVD truncation option for HTLM coefficient calculation being explored.
- BJ's CCPP model variable name PR in MPAS-JEDI under review.
- MPAS 120km 3DVar static B experiment in Skylab being fixed/updated (requires ingesting new BUMP files).
- Minor update for ProcessPerts merge in progress.
Observations (OBS):
- Surface Operator: Unified surface operator strategy being developed for various variables (T, Ps, Q) and algorithms (NOAA GSL, EMC, Met Office, etc.). Met Office created a generic operator with placeholders. GSL will transition their surface T operator development into this generic operator. Met Office will then transition surface pressure. Surface Q will be last.
- Aircraft VarBC: Pathway for development established with NOAA/EMC, NASA, and Met Office. Met Office working on ObsBias writeout (branch name in UFO issue #3473, open for testing).
- Other PRs and development ongoing (to be discussed in OBS meetings).
CRTM:
- Cloud Lookup Table: Penn State requested a new cloud lookup table with new particle habits in different size bins. This will enhance CRTM flexibility and support developing a melting-to-model transition and improving passive microwave in cold clouds.
- Aircraft Jacobian: Continuing work with STAR.
Compo:
- GEOS CF 32-member experiment ongoing; publication in progress.
Interfaces:
- welcome to the team Raji !
- Vader: Steve V working to make VADER LVCs more flexible / usable
- GPU Spectral B: Liam working on adjoints for Legendre and Fourier transforms.
- working on ectrans offload to GPU; Legendre transforms done and Fourier transforms next
- enabling UFO H(x) application to switch ObsSpace backend between current ObsGroup and new OSDF, this enables testing of OSDF for performance validation. Towards this goal, adding channel-selection to new ObsSpace OSDF backend.
EMC:
- GFS 17 Prototyping: Focused on high-resolution coupled system experiments with snow, land, and marine DA using JEDI.
- UFO: PRs enable all-sky microwave in precip regions. Starting work on European cloud detection. PR to allow compiling OOPS with static libraries (discussion point).
- FV3-JEDI: Changes to unstructured grid writer improve memory usage and speed.
- GSI Workflow Replication: Need to consider vertical interpolation and terrain. All FV3-JEDI geometries should have a concept of terrain.
- Intel Compilers: Issues with recent code versions and older Intel compilers.
- Vertical Interpolation: Post-processing planned (Dan).
GMAO:
- Spack Update: updated to Spack 1.9; SWElL dev pinned. New SWElL changes incorporate aircraft bias correction.
- QC for Specific Humidity: Hui corrected YAMLs (working with Ben R on UFO-related things, including CO2 visibility in IR).
- 3D Pressure: Working on capability (Dan, Ro). Changes to linear operators caused ctest failures.
- Interpolation: Ricardo working with Francois.
- Spack Testing: Dorukan reports Spack working; testing cycling experiments.
- GSI-BEC: Issues noted; hoping interpolation changes will help.
Navy:
- Nancy Baker retired, she will be missed.
- Primarily preparing for review.
Met Office:
- CI Container: Not yet working.
- Special Topic (March 13th): Multi-resolution DA and hybrid B matrix added. Getting configurations ready for JEDI observation processing.
- Parameter Validation: Now controlled by an environment variable.
- RTTOV: Plans to incorporate new version. RTTOV 14 potentially in use early next year.
MMM:
- Variable Name Change: Ongoing.
- VarBC: Investigating potential issue with covariance of the Jacobian predictor (radiance VarBC).
