General announcements:

  • None

INFRA - Eric

  • No updates

Interfaces & Optimization - Francois H.

  • Changes to interpolation in Saber have been merged, encouraged to update yamls if you're using gisB inside saber
  • Will merge today a significant change in fb3 jedi by Dan to simplify the long names short names etc are handled by the code with a decent amount of removals; if you use fv3 jedi then you will need to update your code
  • IODA reader refactoring work is continuing
  • Old date time format (string based) for ioda files will be deprecated; Steve H has tools in place to assist this reformatting; look for discussions and future communication; documentation can be found in the conventions table in read the docs
  • Work on translation to new surface operators in the coming weeks

ALGO - Nate

  • Lot’s of new features in Saber, big from Benjamin M. with regional spectral capability in Saber
  • gisB fixes are in and PR for atlas interpolator for gauss to cs from UK met
  • More work being done for continuous DA, running implementation of shifting the entire assimilation window and demonstration

OBS - Francois V.

  • UFO merges to update conventions of interpolation; part of Francios H’s update to get to C++ code
  • PR merged from Met Office that will allow observations to be in independent groups; allows for less MPI time
  • Series of PRs for observation pert to reduce density of geovals; more speed and less memory use; can define grid by lat/lon
  • Incorporate CADs (aerosol software)

CRTM - Ben J.

  • Troubleshooting issues with seg faults with new intel compilers (spack-stack 1.9.1) when running GSI
    • Further discussion with NRL on this issue
  • Generating new coefficients for aeronet and PACE
  • STAR generated coefficients for Himawari GHMS
  • Addressing ctest failures for jedi ctrm in debug mode
  • Open PRs being worked to fix emissivity and kmatrix calculations, work from Cheng
  • Continue to work with EMC to get version 3 working with GSI and spack-stack

COMPO - Jerome

  • Bug in emission constraint, should be fixed and now it is stable
  • Maryam is working on version one of the tempo paper, look for a draft in the next couple weeks
  • Shie-wie is looking at AOD products and bias correction; work with CRTM and optical properties

SOCA - Travis

  • No updates

NOAA-EMC - Dan

  • Battling with oneapi compilers too; looking for suggestions on using the debug flags
  • Working on reproducibility and fixes with SOCA; one outstanding issue when reading obs from bufr files (not entire sure if it is bufr read yet)
  • Development work on cloud and aerosol detection system (CADS) working in UFO
  • Also working with radar in UFS
  • Working on regional background model and interpolation model; GIS Bec regional working in Saber with capabilities coming in the next month or so

GMAO

  • Working on LETKF, var, GIS
  • Doruk - changes in gis bec handling in yamls and will update to latest jedi version this week

NRL - Dom

  • Will hold a special topic in 3 weeks to discuss spack-stack debug flags and looking at the oneapi compiler issues. Dom will get input from Dan and Hernan with their current issues.
  • On going work with cris; error relating to mcards winds; ongoing efforts on 4dvar implementation and change in vertical coordinate in forecast model; working on middle atmos application

Met Office - Joanne

  • Modification of local volume solvers being worked on
  • UFO merge has allowed observation processing to be able to be run on all obs types when there are 0 observations

ROMS - HernanA

  • Working on operation grids for US east coast

OAR - Ming

  • Focus on two real time systems running 3denvar, simulated impact from temp and wind to test the 3km and 4km grid for difference in scientific evaluation
  • Won’t have resources to run full 3km domain with ensemble forecast
  • Next steps will be running ensemble forecast with detkf updates and start to test surface data (have to set hofx to false but working on other tuning)
  • Colleagues working on radiance data and will report on their progress in the future
