Format

Definition - The file format, physical medium, or dimensions of the resource.

Format values should be chosen from the list of Internet Media Types at: http://www.isi.edu/in-notes/iana/assignments/media-types/. Note newer media types are often not included, but the document gives guidance on how to designate formats not yet included on the list.

Identifier

Definition - An unambiguous reference to the resource within a given context.

The identifier element in the DC portion of a record should be used only for identifiers linked to the resource, not for the identifier of the metadata record itself. Put metadata record identifiers in the OAI portion of a record. Identifiers that are URIs should be associated with the Dublin Core (DC) recommended encoding scheme URI that looks like:

<dc:identifier xsi:type="dct:URI">http://my.url.org</dc:identifier>

Rights

Definition - Information about rights held in and over the resource.

Typically, rights information includes a statement about various property rights associated with the resource, including intellectual property rights.

Rights information applies only to rights information about the resource, not the Metadata. Metadata rights information can be added to the about container in OAI (see the OAI Guidelines for further information).

Creator, Contributor, Publisher

Definition - see individual definitions below

  • Creator - An entity primarily responsible for making the resource
  • Contributor - An entity responsible for making contributions to the resource.
  • Publisher - An entity responsible for making the resource available

If a project/organization itself is a contributor to resource content in some way, and is also responsible for making the resource available, Publisher should be used to hold the project/organization name.
